Presentation
The patient was being monitored for osteoporosis and noted to have low TSH.
Patient Data
The thyroid gland is present and appears entirely suprasternal.
There is a marked reduction in uptake throughout both lobes of the thyroid gland.
The uptake in the thyroid gland is 0.2% (Institutional Range 0.5-4.0%) and the neck-to-thigh ratio is normal measuring 3.39.
Case Discussion
Given the clinical context of subclinical hyperthyroidism, these findings are most consistent with subacute thyroiditis.
The patient is being monitored for any further decrease in TSH or development of clinical features of hyperthyroidism which may warrant therapy.
