The original description of the Askin tumour (by Askin and Rosai in 1979 1), and many studies following it have led to a great deal of confusion. Until recently it has been considered a separate entity or as a type of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumour, usually of the the chest wall.

Recent genetic research, however, has led to the conclusion that it is essentially the same as Ewing sarcoma, and now is part of the collective term Ewing sarcoma family of tumours (ESFT), sharing similar demographics, imaging findings and prognosis 2-3.

As such it is discussed as Ewing sarcoma of the chest wall.
