Described below are points on assessment of bones and soft tissue on CXRchest radiographs.
1.Ribs
- normal variant: bifid rib
- rib fractures in children < 2yrs: suspect NAI. Occurs in posterior ribs, close to the spine. Associated with other fractures (skull, long bones, spine, sternum). In 50% of proven NAI, radiographs are normal
- lesions: lytic (lucency in bone), sclerotic (opacity in bone). Invert contrast to spot lesions better
2. Vertebrae
- fractures: compression, burst, change fractures
- Lesions: lytic, sclerotic
- clavicle: fractures, distal erosion, sclerosis
3. Soft tissue
- asymmetric soft tissue, surgical clips (around lobectomy/pneumonectomy/axillary clearance, thyroidectomy), Poland syndrome
- note subcutaneous emphysema and lacerations
