Atresia refers (plural: atresias) refers to a situation where there is absence, underdevelopment or abnormal closure, of a normal anatomical tubular structure or opening. 

Contrast this with agenesis which refers to the complete absence of aany anatomical structure with very rudimentary remnant tissuesincluding its primordial precursors. This contrasts with agenesis, in which there is no development of the structure at all. The term atresia is often used with hollow structures such as a bronchus or intestine.
