CheckList for EvaluAtion of Radiomics research (CLEAR)

Last revised by Burak Kocak on 1 May 2024

The CheckList for Evaluation of Radiomics Research (CLEAR) is a 58-item reporting guideline designed specifically for radiomics. It aims to improve the quality of reporting in radiomics research 1. CLEAR is endorsed by the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the European Society of Medical Imaging Informatics (EuSoMII). The EQUATOR Network, a well-known comprehensive library for health research reporting, included the CLEAR checklist in their library.

Overview

  • CLEAR's checklists are accessible online 1

  • a shortened version, CLEAR-S, is available and includes only the methodological items and the ones related to open science

  • CLEAR does not primarily aim to improve and assess the methodological quality. A quality scoring tool, METhodological RadiomICs Score (METRICS), also endorsed by EuSoMII, is highly recommended for this purpose 2

  • CLEAR covers both hand-crafted and deep learning-based radiomics

  • 56 items of CLEAR are essential, while 2 items in the open science are non-essential but recommended

  • self-reporting with a filled-out CLEAR as a supplement may add value to the radiomics studies, making it more transparent and easy to assess for readers and reviewers alike 3

  • adherence to CLEAR in designing radiomics research is expected to improve the quality of studies and is highly recommended; it can also be used following the completion of studies

  • when filling out the CLEAR checklist, the use of "No" (i.e. not fulfilled) and "N/A" (i.e. non-applicable) needs utmost care in terms of the accuracy of the reporting 3
