Flexor carpi radialis tendon tunnel

Last revised by Bahman Rasuli on 5 Oct 2023

The flexor carpi radialis tendon tunnel is a fibro-osseous canal in the anterior/volar aspect of the wrist. The tendon of the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) muscle occupies approximately 90% of the available space in the tunnel.

Gross anatomy

The FCR tendon travels above the scaphoid and through the scaphotrapeziotrapezoid joint before entering its fibro-osseous tunnel. The tendon enters the tunnel by passing through a vertical groove on the trapezium.

Boundaries
  • volar and lateral: trapezial groove

  • dorsal: trapezial tubercle

  • medial: the retinacular septum, which is the deep part of the flexor retinaculum, and separates the FCR tunnel from the carpal tunnel
