Hand PA view is a commonly used projection to identify wrist pathology.

Indications

  • fractures
  • metacarpal dislocation
  • foreign body detection and localisation

Patient position

  • patient is made to sit alongside the X-ray table
  • forearm is pronated and palmar surface of hand and extended fingers is kept in contact with the cassette/FPDs 

X-ray beam features

  • a vertical beam is employed
  • the beam is centred over third metacarpal head
