Hepatic artery proper
Updates to Article Attributes
The hepatic artery proper or the proper hepatic artery arises from the common hepatic artery as it divides into its two terminal branches, the hepatic artery proper and the gastroduodenal artery.
Gross anatomy
Course
The hepatic artery proper runs anterior to the portal vein and to the left of the common bile duct to form the portal triad. These three structures maintain this position while lying between the duodenum and the porta hepatis, enveloped in peritoneum in the free edge of the lesser sac 1. It then terminates by bifurcating into the right and left hepatic arteries before entering the porta hepatis of the liver.
