Hepatic stellate cells

Last revised by Rohit Sharma on 20 Feb 2024

Hepatic stellate cells present in the perisinusoidal space of Disse between the fenestrated sinusoidal endothelial cell layer and hepatic epithelial cells, store vitamin A. They participate in liver development and regeneration if activated by damage such as after chronic hepatitis by producing excessive extracellular matrix and activating angiogenesis in the liver fibrogenesis. Furthermore HSCs are a significant component of the tumor microenvironment of hepatocellular carcinoma.
