Thumb hypoplasia

Thumb hypoplasia is a type of congenital hand abnormality and may be seen in isolation or with other congenital abnormalities (including other hand abnormalities, radial ray deficiency or other syndromes, e.g. Holt-Oram and Fanconi syndrome).

Classification

There are several types of thumb abnormalities that range from a slightly small hypoplastic thumb, all the way to complete absence and thumb aplasia 1.

  • type 1: smaller thumb

  • type 2: abnormal muscles

  • type 3a: absent muscles

  • type 3b: abnormal bones

  • type 4: absent bones

  • type 5: absent thumb
