The inferior petro-occipital vein is located immediately inferior to the petro-occipital suture and provides a communication between the internal carotid artery venous plexus of Rektorzik, or less commonly the cavernous sinus, anteromedially and the jugular bulb, or less commonly the inferior petrosal sinus, posterolaterally 1.
It has been used as an alternative venous access route to the cavernous sinus when the inferior petrosal sinus is not available 2.
