The inferior petro-occipital vein is located immediately inferior to the petro-occipital suture and provides a communication between the internal carotid artery venous plexus of Rektorzik, or less commonly the cavernous sinus, anteromedially and the jugular bulb, or less commonly the inferior petrosal sinus, posterolaterally 1

It has been used as an alternative venous access route to the cavernous sinus when the inferior petrosal sinus is not available 2
