Intra-ocular silicone oil

Last revised by Yuranga Weerakkody on 25 Oct 2023

Intra-ocular silicone oil has been used as a vitreous replacement and for internal tamponade of complex retinal detachments.

Some reported side effects include glaucoma and corneal decompensation 1.

Hyperattenuating on unenhanced CT with a reported average CT unit value of around 130 2. It appears well-defined and generally of homogeneous density.

  • T1: hyperintense relative to water 2

  • T2

Migration of silicone outside ocular globe (e.g. intracranial - rare 5)

In some situations, it may mimic a vitreous hemorrhage on CT.
