Parathyroid lipoadenoma

Parathyroid lipoadenomas are extremely rare tumors that are often considered a variant of a parathyroid adenoma.

Epidemiology

There may be slight female predilection based on limited studies 2.

Clinical presentation

Patients may present with primary hyperparathyroidism.

Pathology

Histologically, almost all parathyroid lipoadenomas consist of > 50% mature adipose tissue.

Radiographic features

Ultrasound

Parathyroid lipoadenomas may be seen as juxtathyroid lesions. They may appear more echogenic/hyperechoic due to their fat content 4.

History and etymology

It is believed that parathyroid lipoadenomas were first described by Ober and Kaiser in 1958 7.
