Persistent primitive olfactory artery
Updates to Article Attributes
PPOA is a rare variant of the proximal anterior cerebral artery1,2. It is proposed to be more prone to aneurysms due to its sharp hairpin-like turn.Embryologically Embryologically, the POA is the rostral division of the primitive internal carotid artery. ThereThere are two variants of PPOA1.
1. Type 1:
The anomalous artery arises from the internal carotid artery, runs along the olfactory tract and makes a hairpin bend to supply the territory of the distal anterior cerebral artery.
2. Type 2:
The artery arises from the anterior cerebral artery and passes through the cribriform plate to to supply the nasal cavity as the ethmoidal artery.
