A short humeral stem arthroplasty is less than 100 mm in length (standard-length > 100 mm) and comprises titanium with a proximal porous surface coating and metaphyseal press-fit fixation
On this page:
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
preserving bone stock
eliminates damaging biological effects of cement
easier and faster revision options
-
modular convertible total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) with press fit fixation of short humeral stem, is used as a primary implant for an anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). In the event of fail the prosthesis or the rotator cuff can be convert in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA), with retention of the humeral stem and glenoid baseplate.
Disadvantages
varus or valgus malalignment in the metadiaphyseal region of the proximal humerus with smaller stem diameters that reduce stress shielding of the proximal humerus
radiolucent lines and calcar osteolysis
Radiographic features
Radiographic signs of stress shielding of the proximal humerus are associated with increasing relative stem diameter
Plain radiograph
The postoperative assessment is usually done using AP, Grashey and axillary views associated with careful comparison with serial x-rays
History and etymolgy
A short stem humeral shoulder prosthesis system was introduced in 2009 by the Mathys Company.
