Presentation
Upper respiratory tract infection symptoms. Increasing work of breathing and cough.
Patient Data
There is symmetrical, moderate peribronchial thickening in the perihilar lungs. Increased perihilar airspace density may relate to early consolidation. No dense/lobar consolidation. The lung volumes are normal.
The cardiothymic contour is within normal limits.
Case Discussion
Bronchiolitis refers to small airway inflammation. In young children, the most common cause is viral infection with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) the most common agent.
CXR may demonstrate peribronchial thickening (as in this case), without focal/lobal consolidation. Air trapping and hyperinflation of the lungs are variably present.
