Duplication of inferior vena cava

Case contributed by Senai Goitom Sereke
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Prostate cancer for staging.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Male

Incidental finding: duplicated left-sided inferior vena cava (IVC) as a continuation of the left common iliac vein, in keeping with duplication of the IVC.

Grossly enlarged prostate with regional and common iliac lymphadenopathy and a most likely bone metastatic deposit in the right iliac bone, in keeping with T3bN1M1b.

Case Discussion

Duplication of the inferior vena cava is a rare congenital vascular anomaly due to persistence of left supra cardinal vein. It can be sporadic as in this case or in association with other congenital renal anomalies. Isolated duplication of IVC is found incidentally during imaging of abdomen and pelvis, as in this case for prostate cancer staging.
