Presentation
A 60-year-old female patient presenting with vertigo. On spectral Doppler ultrasonography of the left vertebral artery showed antegrade and retrograde flow. The patient was referred for MR angiography.
Patient Data
Severe stenosis of the left subclavian artery at its origin measuring approximately 3 cm in length.
Severe stenosis of the left subclavian artery (yellow arrow) at its origin measuring approximately 3 cm in length.
Case Discussion
Subclavian steal syndrome results from occlusion or severe stenosis of the proximal subclavian artery resulting in complete retrograde or antegrade-retrograde flow in the ipsilateral vertebral artery.
The most important signs in the Doppler examination of the vertebral arteries include:
- presence or absence of flow
- direction of blood flow
- flow pattern
