Upper abdominal discomfort.
Patient Data
Mostly exophytic, heterogeneously enhancing mass with a few flecks of calcification arising from the gastric fundus/body along the greater curvature. There are a few areas of mucosal/submucosal irregularity which confirms that it arises from or invades the stomach.
No metastases.
Case Discussion
Fairly typical appearance of a gastric GIST, characterized by a predominantly exophytic submucosal mass with a few calcifications. Pathologic diagnosis was confirmed at the time of surgery.
Pathology:
MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION: Sections show fragments of tumor composed of spindle cells arranged in fascicles. No mitotic figures seen. Immunohistochemistry positive for CD117 and CD3.
