Presentation

Neck pain and raised inflammatory markers. ? neck abscess

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Female
  • enlarged, heterogeneously enhancing left submandibular gland relative to the right
  • periglandular inflammatory fat stranding with thickening of the overlying platysma and deep cervical fascia
  • at least 3 calculi within the left sublingual space along the expected path of the submandibular gland. No sialectasis
  • no neck abscess

Case Discussion

Acute submandibular sialadenitis secondary to sialolithiasis.

The submandibular gland is most commonly affected in this situation because of the upward course of the submandibular duct.
