Presentation
Fell in the bathroom. Flank pain.
Patient Data
This case featured in our 2016 Trauma Radiology Course which is now available to view online.
Fractures of the right 7th and 8th ribs posteriorly and generally increased density of the right hemithorax compared to left suggestive of a right sided hemothorax.
CT confirms the x-ray suspicion of a right sided hemothorax related to fractures of the 7th, 8th, 10th and 11th ribs posteriorly and 7th to 11th right transverse process fractures. No definite contrast extravasation is seen to indicate active arterial bleeding.
Case Discussion
Typical appearance of a unilateral hemothorax on supine chest x-ray related to multiple rib and transverse process fractures.
