Triceps tendon tear

Presentation

Left elbow blunt trauma three weeks ago. Posterior elbow pain and swelling. Negative elbow radiograph for a fracture.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Full-width, full-thickness non-bony avulsion of the posterior fibers (formed by combined lateral and long heads of the triceps) of the triceps tendon from the ulnar olecranon process. The fluid-filled defect is about 40 mm long. Most of the anterior fibers of the triceps tendon (formed by the medial head) are intact. Adjacent posterior elbow subcutaneous edema.

Cine-loop during elbow extension shows torn posterior fibers and intact anterior fibers of the triceps tendon.

Case Discussion

The case shows post-traumatic partial rupture of the triceps tendon in an elderly patient. Surgical follow-up is not available as the patient declined it.
