Imaging technology article structure

Last revised by Joachim Feger on 14 Apr 2024

Articles about imaging technology require a different structure than articles about disease. Articles with this structure are generally assigned to the imaging technology section and may also be assigned to a specific system if appropriate.

===============================================================================

The introduction should define the specific imaging technology topic and summarize the main elements in a few lines.

Should outline specific, alternative and recommended terminology.

This section should contain a list of clinical problems and/or diseases where this imaging technology can be used.

Optional subheading (H2): usually applies if the technology requires a justifying indication (e.g. ionizing radiation, invasive or semi-invasive procedure).

Optional subheading (H2): only if contraindications apply.

Should outline the imaging method and technical issues and may variably include one or more of the following topics and optionally also as subheadings (H2):

  • Physical principles (H2)

  • Device structure (H2)

  • Device function (H2)

  • Image acquisition (H2)

  • Image reconstruction (H2)

  • Post-processing (H2)

  • Technical advances (H2)

  • Protocols (H2): list protocols or specific examples with internal links

  • should include a description of how the results of the technology are interpreted

  • comments on sensitivity, specificity, limitations, applicability and usage should also be included

  • comparison with results of alternative methods can also be mentioned in this section

Optional subheading (H2): only if applicable in imaging techniques with additional quantitative data derivatives e.g. cardiac function, flow measurements, myocardial mapping etc.

Outline of the limitations of the technology.

  • description of typical pitfalls and limitations of the method or technology

  • list of artifacts with internal links

Outline of the development and history of the imaging technology. See also: History and etymology (article structure).

Should cover information useful for imaging technologists, radiologists or physicists, especially concerning implementation, application and maintenance.
