Presentation

A patient with a smoking history presents with low back pain.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male

Abdominal aorta US

ultrasound

Aorta diameter:

  • proximal abdominal aorta: 2.3 cm

  • mid-abdominal aorta: 3.7 cm

  • distal abdominal aorta: 3.6 cm

Dilatation of the abdominal aorta greater than 3 cm is suggestive of abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Multiple 2 cm linear echogenicities are demonstrated within the distal abdominal aorta, suggesting a nonocclusive arterial thrombus.

Case Discussion

This represents a case of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The patient presented to the emergency department with lower back pain for one week. An abdominal ultrasound confirmed the presence of an AAA greater than 3 cm. A tentative treatment plan for the patient included smoking cessation.
