Acute appendicitis

ultrasound

There is a dilated, blind-ended, non-compressible tubular structure with thickened walls and without the presence of peristalsis, measuring about 7 mm at the right iliac fossa and representing the enlarged vermiform appendix. It was tender on probing.

There is increased echogenicity in the fat surrounding the appendix.

Case Discussion

The sonographic findings are in keeping with acute appendicitis.

The patient elected to proceed with surgical management via laparoscopic appendectomy. The patient tolerated the procedure well with no complications.

The final pathological diagnosis was acute appendicitis.
