Presentation
One day of episgastric to lower abdominal pain.
Patient Data
Thickened appendix is distended measuring up to 11 mm in diameter, with a small amount of intraperitoneal free fluid is noted. Probe tenderness illicited over the appendix.
Transabdominal examination of bilateral ovaries and uterus is unremarkable.
Conclusion: Appendicitis.
MACROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION: "Appendix": An appendix 55mm in length x up to 14mm in diameter. Cream serosal exudate covers the entire specimen. Sectioning reveals intraluminal hemorrhage. No tumor is seen.
MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION: Sections of the appendix show mucosal ulceration, associated with transmural acute inflammatory cell infiltrate. The serosa is covered by heavy inflammatory exudate. There is no evidence of malignancy.
DIAGNOSIS: Appendix: Acute appendicitis.
