Acute suppurative appendicitis

Presentation

Lower abdominal pain of one day duration

Patient Data

Age: 13 year
Gender: Male

The appendix is diffusely dilated, measuring 16 mm in maximum thickness, associated with diffusely layered hyper-vascularized edematous mural thickening as well as regional edematous fat stranding of increased vascularity (hyperemic) with free fluid and few reactive mesenteric lymph nodes. About 7 mm intraluminal fecolith is noted.

Mild pelvic free fluid is also seen.

Appearances are those of acute appendicitis.

Appearances are those of acute appendicitis. Appendiceal mucocele should be considered.

Pathology result: Acute suppurative appendicitis. Negative for malignancy.

Case Discussion

The CT and sonographic findings are consistent with acute appendicitis with possible associated appendiceal mucocele.

However, the pathology result showed acute suppurative appendicitis.
