Presentation

Patient with a history of pain when urinating, associated with multiple urinary tract infections.

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Male

Both kidneys are enlarged with loss of normal architecture, due to the evidence of multiple cysts that cover the entire kidney.

Case Discussion

On ultrasound, the kidneys are usually large and asymmetric, with multiple cysts all over the parenchyma, both in the cortex and in the medulla. Cysts complicated by hemorrhage or infections present with internal echoes, thickening of the wall, and occasionally residual-fluid levels.
