Ankylosing spondylitis patient. Back pain.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Osteopenic bones.

Bamboo spine. Sacroiliac joint ankylosis.

The dagger sign is well illustrated on the AP projection.

Superior endplate depression of T12 and all lumbar vertebrae consistent with superior endplate fractures.

Extensive multilevel facet joint degenerative change.

Case Discussion

Bamboo spine and sacroiliac joint ankylosis typical of ankylosing spondylitis.

The osteopenic bones and extensive vertebral fractures likely relate to previous steriod use for this inflammatory arthropathy.
