Presentation

Jaundice, pale stools and brown urine.

Patient Data

Age: 45 days
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Ultrasound (8-hour fasting) reveals:

  • a non-dysmorphic, homogeneous liver

  • triangular cord sign (4 mm)

  • dilatation of the hepatic artery with a hepatic artery/portal vein ratio of 0.56

  • scleroatrophic gallbladder with irregular contours

  • normal spleen

  • no ascites

Case Discussion

This is a typical illustration of biliary atresia on ultrasound: a sclero-atrophic gallbladder, triangular cord sign, and an increased HA/PV ratio (>0.45).
