Presentation
Post-menopausal, routine mammogram prior to commencing hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Patient Data
Moderately dense fibroglandular tissue.
There are no suspicious masses, lymph nodes or microcalcifications bilaterally.
The skin and nipples are normal bilaterally.
There are bilateral, symmetric, curvilinear, and calcified, Breform breast implants.
Digital breast tomosynthesis confirms the bilateral calcified Breform intramammary implants.
There are no additional suspicious findings.
Selected images of the breast ultrasound confirm the calcified Breform mesh within the breast soft tissues as a linear, calcified and non-anatomical echogenic band as outlined above. The appearance somewhat resembles a "tram track". There are no foreign-body granulomas present.
There are no suspicious sonographic abnormalities present, with normal fibroglandular tissue throughout.
Case Discussion
The patient confirmed a history of prior bilateral reduction mammaplasty and mastopexy (breast lift) using the Breform implant.
The Breform implant is a permanent internal polyester mesh utilized to shape and lift the breast. Due to its resemblance to a cup of a traditional brassiere, it's often referred to as the "internal or permanent bra"3.
This is a case of a calcified Breform implant; the patient confirmed surgery approximately 10 years prior!
