Bronchial atresia

Presentation

Incidental findings. Metastatic workup.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male
ct

There is a well-defined, hyperattenuating nodule-like lesion in the vicinity of the apicoposterior segment of the left upper lobe, which is most likely a mucus plug in the atretic bronchiole with surrounding hyperinflated parenchyma or air-trapping.

The patient is a known case of rectal adenocarcinoma.

A small pleural-based nodule in the left lower lobe is newly found and is too small for characterization (needs follow-up).

Case Discussion

Current CT findings are concerning for bronchial atresia (sub-segmental) in the left upper lobe (well visualized on minimum intensity projection).

Bronchial atresia is a congenital/developmental disorder that is characterized by focal obliteration of the proximal segment of the bronchus and demonstrates either segmental or sub-segmental (as in this case).
