Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male

Incidental findings on a chest CT examination.

Well-defined calcified mass in segment VI of the liver with water-lily sign in keeping with hydatid cyst. A round calcified lesion without soft tissue mass in the interpolar region of the left kidney probably a calcified hydatid cyst or calcified simple cyst.

Case Discussion

Calcified hepatic hydatid cyst is the last stage of hepatic hydatid cyst metamorphosis. It is considered an inactive/degenerative stage of the cyst, according to 2001 WHO classification of hepatic hydatid cysts. This stage can demonstrate the water lilly sign if it is not completely calcified as in this case.
