Presentation

Numbness and tingling sensation in the median nerve distribution of the right hand.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Female
mri

Enlargement of the median nerve at the level of pisiform, flattening at the level of hook of hamate with a median nerve flattening ratio of 3, and loss of fat within the carpal tunnel in keeping with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Case Discussion

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a collection of signs and symptoms that is related to the compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel. The most common presenting symptoms are numbness, paresthesia and pain in the median nerve distribution.

MRI of the tunnel is helpful pre-operatively, if any mass, normal variant such as bifid median nerve or arthritic changes are suspected.
