Cervical polyp

Case contributed by Mahsa Geravandi
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Abnormal vaginal bleeding and irregular menstrual cycles, and noticed spotting in between her periods.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female

Transvaginal

ultrasound

Transvaginal ultrasound showed a solitary homogeneous and echogenic lesion surrounded by fluid within the cervical canal with a thin stalk. The size of the polyp was approximately 3mm in diameter. On color Doppler imaging a single feeding vessel was seen extending to the polyp. These findings are consistent with a cervical polyp.

Case Discussion

On examination, the patient was found to have a cervical polyp. The polyp appeared as a smooth, reddish mass protruding from the cervical os. The polyp measured approximately 3mm in diameter and was easily visible on speculum examination. There was no cervical tenderness or discharge noted on examination. A Pap smear was also performed, which showed no evidence of malignancy. The patient was counseled about the nature of cervical polyps and the potential for them to cause abnormal vaginal bleeding. She was advised that the polyp could be removed by a simple outpatient procedure called a polypectomy.
