Chopart amputation

Case contributed by Nora Laban
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Post amputation of the foot.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

Right foot

x-ray

Radiographs show amputation/disarticulation at the level of the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints, consistent with Chopart amputation. There is soft tissue irregularity/ulceration at the stump.

Case Discussion

In a Chopart amputation, the disarticulation is at the calcaneocuboid and talonavicular joints (Chopart joint). This requires a viable heel pad 1. Complications following Chopart amputation are common and include rebalancing and prosthesis fitting issues. Many patients may subsequently require below-knee amputations 2. Chopart amputation is rarely performed in patients with diabetic foot infection because of the high rate of failure 3.
