Presentation
Prenatal patient being evaluated for increased symphysis-fundal height.
Patient Data
Obstetric ultrasound at 30 weeks gestational age showing a live fetus with double gastric bubbles, consistent with duodenal atresia.. There is associated polyhydramnios
No other fetal anomaly was demonstrable
Case Discussion
A typical double bubble sign in duodenal atresia with polyhydramnios.
The bubbles represent a fluid-filled stomach and distal duodenum. Distal bowel loops are also typically poorly delineated due to paucity of fluid within the bowel loops. Since less amniotic fluid is swallowed, polyhydramnios is a common association.
The discovery of duodenal atresia requires searching for other fetal anomalies.
