Presentation
Baseline screening mammography. No familial history of breast cancer. History of augmentation mammoplasty.
Patient Data
Routine screening mammography in standard CC and MLO views and along with the Eklund technique demonstrate:
Post-operative changes are seen due to bilateral augmentation mammoplasty and implant insertion (BI-RADS 2).
Suspicious mass and calcification are not detectable in the breasts.
There is no evidence in favor of retraction and skin thickening.
In the visualized mammography field, the lymph node with a suspected pathological appearance is not seen bilaterally in the axillary regions.
Case Discussion
Mammography in women with breast implants can be more challenging than in women without implants, as the implants can obscure some of the breast tissue and make it more difficult to detect abnormalities.
Special techniques, such as Eklund displacement views, may improve the visibility of breast tissue in these cases. It consists of posterosuperior displacement of the implants simultaneously to an anterior traction of the breast, pushing the implants towards the chest wall up to flatten. The visualized part of the breast parenchyma may vary depending on the size of the breasts and implants. It is a complex technique that requires significant sensitivity and skill by mammographers.
It should noted that patients with breast implants should still get regular screening mammograms as recommended unless they had both breasts removed with a bilateral mastectomy before implant insertion.
