Emphysematous necrotizing pancreatitis

Presentation

Pain abdomen for 3 days

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female

There is evidence of acute inflammation of pancreatic parenchyma with irregular areas of gas in and around the pancreas, extending anteriorly up to the omentum.

There is peri-pancreatic soft tissue inflammation with fluid along pancreatic tail and spleen.

No organized fluid collection.

Small dependent radiodense sludge is noted within the gallbladder.

Mild left pleural effusion is noted.

Case Discussion

Emphysematous pancreatitis is due to necrotizing infection of the pancreas by gas forming bacteria.

Percutaneous drainage of collection or surgery is the treatment of choice.
