Presentation

Known case of β-thalassemia major, complaining of back pain.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years

mri

Diffuse T1WI bone marrow hypo-intensity involving all visualized skeleton, suggesting red bone marrow reconversion.

There are multiple variable-sized paravertebral, intercostal, and posterior epidural masses.

The largest masses are seen in bilateral paravertebral lies at the level of T5 to T8, which appear hypo-intense on T1WI and T2WI due to massive iron deposition.

No dorsal disc herniations or abnormal spinal cord signal intensity.

Case Discussion

Typical findings of extramedullary hematopoiesis with red marrow reconversion in a patient with β-thalassemia major anemia.
