Presentation
Known case of thalassemia intermedia with pelvic pain, low backache and history of repeated blood transfusions.
Patient Data
Transvaginal sonography revealed multilobulated hypoechoic pelvic masses posterior to the uterus in the presacral region and showing areas of color flow within.
Case Discussion
It is uncommon for extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) to present as a presacral mass. Typically, EMH is found in other organs such as the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes.
While EMH is generally considered a benign condition, its presentation as a mass can mimic other more serious conditions, such as malignancy or infection. Therefore, it is important to carefully evaluate any mass-like lesions found in the vertebral and paravertebral regions to determine if they may be related to EMH.
