Foot soft tissue cyst with a foreign body

Presentation

Complaining of the right foot sole region lump for the last few months. Mild local pain while wearing a shoe.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male

There is a thin-walled cystic lesion in the sole of the midfoot; measuring about 31 x 30 x 15 mm (7 cc volume). It is located in the subcutaneous plane abutting the skin as well as the plantar fascia. There are internal tiny echoes in the cyst along with a small linear echogenic focus (3 mm length). The lesion shows a lobulation on its lateral side. There is no calcification/ vascularity. Acoustic enhancement is present. The underlying plantar fascia is normal.

Case Discussion

An elderly patient presented with a lump in the midfoot sole region for the last few months. The ultrasound shows a subcutaneous cyst with a foreign body in it. The patient could not recollect any penetrating injury locally.

Surgical exploration revealed a pus-filled cyst with a thorn fragment.
