Gruen zones of femur: zones 1-7
Case Discussion
The Gruen zones of the hip are distinct regions used in assessment of aseptic loosening in total hip arthroplasty. Zone 1-7 pertain to the femur in AP as shown in this diagram.
Zone 1-7 (AP) represent the following:
Zone 1: greater trochanter
Zone 2: lateral mid stem
Zone 3: lateral distal stem
Zone 4: tip of the stem
Zone 5: medial distal stem
Zone 6: medial mid stem
Zone 7: medial calcar
Note that calcar refers to a bony spur that lies deep to the lesser trochanter and posterior to the femoral neck.
