Imaged as part of routine screening, asymptomatic.

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Radiograph shows a hypoplastic left third rib. Lateral margin of the left third rib is approximately 1 cm medial to a tangent line drawn between the lateral margins of the second and fourth rib.

Case Discussion

Hypoplastic ribs, also known as short ribs, are diagnosed when the lateral margin of the rib is 4 mm medial to the a tangent line drawn along the lateral margins of the adjacent ribs. These classically involve the first rib but other ribs may also be affected.

In descending order, these occur more frequently in the right, bilaterally, and in the left. There is a slight female predilection.
