Hypoxic–ischemic brain injury

Case contributed by Bahman Rasuli
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Intellectual disability in a child who experienced severe asphyxia shortly after birth.

Patient Data

Age: 10 years
Gender: Male

Bilateral symmetric gliotic changes are seen involving the basal ganglia, including the putamen, globus pallidus, and thalamus as well as along the central sulcus suggestive of moderate gray matter injury on the background of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

Case Discussion

Cerebral hypoperfusion injury usually affects the watershed zones and should be differentiated from other white matter diseases and congenital infection. Brain MRI in the cases of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is performed to determine the long-term outcome and deficits.
