Interstitial ectopic pregnancy

ultrasound

A gestational sac measuring 17.1 mm is observed in an eccentric position, surrounded by myometrium. The endometrium exhibits an echogenic secretory phase appearance. A corpus luteum cyst is noted in the right ovary.

Case Discussion

The patient presented with pelvic pain and a history of a positive beta-hCG. Ultrasound results indicate a normal, non-gravid endometrial cavity. A gestational sac measuring 17.1 mm is observed in an eccentric position, surrounded by myometrium.

Interstitial ectopic pregnancy is the implantation of the gestation in the most proximal part of the fallopian tube. Approximately 2%-5% of ectopic pregnancies occur in the interstitial or cornual regions of the uterus. There is a higher risk of maternal mortality due to the challenge of timely diagnosis and the high risk of rupture of the interstitial pregnancy, causing catastrophic bleeding.

The patient underwent laparoscopic surgical removal of the gestational sac.
