Intramuscular lipoma of the sternocleidomastoid muscle

Presentation

Left-sided neck swelling for many years. No local pain or skin changes.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male

There is a well-defined lesion at the site of swelling pointed by the patient. The lesion measures about 60 x 36 x 32 mm. It shows heterogeneous hyperechoic echopattern with linear internal foci. There is no calcification/ cystic changes/ vascularity. The lesion shows mild compressibility. It is posterior to the superficial lobe of the left parotid gland. The lesion is not separable from left sternocleidomastoid mass and shows a claw sign in relation to the left sternocleidomastoid muscle. The rest of the neck examination was normal.

Case Discussion

An elderly patient presented with left-sided neck swelling for the last many years. The lesion shows ultrasound features of a lipoma. The lesion shows a claw sign in relation to the left sternocleidomastoid muscle.

Surgery revealed the mass originated from the sternocleidomastoid muscle.

Histopathological confirmed the diagnosis of a lipoma.
