Presentation
Painless mid-thigh mass feeling on physical exam. Unclear history of falling several years ago.
Patient Data
A 21 x 54 mm oval-shaped well-defined juxta cortical calcified mass is noted in the mid-diaphysis of the right femur without adjacent cortical destruction.
Case Discussion
In a short-term follow-up, no significant changes could be seen, and then the patient underwent an ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy. The histopathology evaluation confirmed myositis ossificans.
Regarding the appearance and location of the lesion and unclear history of trauma, parosteal osteosarcoma can be considered in differential with myositis ossificans. Unfortunately, the histopathology of myositis ossificans can appear similar to osteosarcoma and, thus, can lead to inappropriate management.
