Case Discussion

Abscess is a purulent collection of fluid surrounded by inflammation and granulation tissue. This fluid collection is typically caused by Staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus species. The infectious mechanism is due to hematogenous spread from distant sites; adjacent structures may also serve as a source of complication. Simple abscesses can be treated outpatient with antibiotics, while complex ones may require drainage with packing and antibiotics.
