Presentation
3-day history of left groin pain and swelling.
Patient Data
Heterogenous fluid collection containing internal gas in the subcutaneous soft tissues of the left groin, separable from the iliopsoas muscles and medial to the left femoral vessels compatible with an abscess.
There is surrounding inflammation extending to the subcutaneous soft tissues of the left gluteal region/proximal thigh. Left external iliac node.
Unable to determine the patency of the left common femoral vessels.
Case Discussion
Abscess is a purulent collection of fluid surrounded by inflammation and granulation tissue. This fluid collection is typically caused by Staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus species. The infectious mechanism is due to hematogenous spread from distant sites; adjacent structures may also serve as a source of complication. Simple abscesses can be treated outpatient with antibiotics, while complex ones may require drainage with packing and antibiotics.
