Presentation
Acute abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant. Fever. Referred for a CT to confirm the clinical suspicion of diverticulitis.
Patient Data
A nodular structure with calcification inside is shown. The structure seems to arise from an ileal loop and is surrounded by stranding of intraabdominal fat. There is a light dilatation of the proximal small bowel secondary to the inflammatory process. Findings are related to Meckel's diverticulum complicated by acute diverticulitis.
Colonic diverticulosis without signs of complication is also observed.
Mild free fluid at the pelvis.
Duodenal diverticulum is noted.
Case Discussion
Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, but only a small proportion will be symptomatic. The most frequent complications are gastrointestinal bleeding, intussusception, intestinal obstruction and diverticulitis, although they are often misdiagnosed.
Surgical treatment was performed on this patient, in which the diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulitis with diffuse purulent peritonitis was confirmed.
